About the National Carer Strategy
On 19 October 2023 the Minister for Social Services (The Hon Amanda Rishworth MP) announced that the government will deliver a National Carer Strategy and invest $3.8 million through to 2025-26 to develop a coherent national agenda. This Strategy will replace the 2011 National Carer Strategy and implementation plans. The Strategy will provide a framework for coordination of carer policy across Commonwealth portfolios including aged care, disability, veterans’ affairs, and mental health. It will be developed in consultation with carers across Australia to ensure it reflects the diversity of carers and the challenges they face; it is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024.
Our contribution to the Strategy
Carers Australia assisted in the design of the 2011 Strategy and the subsequent roll out of implementation plans and has a wide network of contacts in the sector, including members of the National Carer Network, to reach a diverse breadth of carers in Australia. Carers Australia has again supported the Department of Social Services to undertake a range of consultation activities and data collection including roundtable events, interviews, focus groups and online workshops to support the development of a robust and representative strategy.
