Support for Carers Welcomed

Investment for Australia’s Carers

Carers Australia welcomes today’s announcement to increase support for Australia’s 2.65 million unpaid carers. The $3.8 million investment in a National Carers Strategy will provide a coordinated carer policy, removing geographical and agency boundaries for carers. It comes as Carers Australia launches its Carer-Inclusive Workplace Initiative aimed at creating a more inclusive, supportive workplace for Australian’s who provide unpaid care in the community.

National Carers Week 2023 is a time to recognise and celebrate Australia’s unpaid carers who provide care and support to a family member or friend. The theme Millions of Reasons to Care, aims to shine a spotlight on the 2.65 million carers around the country who are so frequently left in the shadows of the person they care for. Carers need the ongoing support of all Australians – from government to businesses, classrooms to families, and medical professionals to communities. National Carers Week will run from Sunday, October 15, to Saturday, October 21.

Carers With Low Wellbeing Hits All-Time High

Australia’s unpaid carers are twice as likely to have low wellbeing compared to other adults, according to the latest figures. Results of the 2023 Carer Wellbeing Survey show carers continue to be at high risk of poor wellbeing and health. Of the 5,881 Australian carers surveyed, 58.3% reported low wellbeing, a significant increase from last year’s 52.6%.

No long-term unpaid leave for carers of older people

Carers Australia is frustrated by the Productivity Commission’s reluctance to prioritise the needs of carers in recommendations arising from its Carer Leave Inquiry. As the Peak Body for Australia’s 2.65 million unpaid carers, we argued throughout the Commission’s Inquiry for carers of older people to be entitled to long-term carer leave. This would allow carers to take an extended time off work to adjust to a new intensive caring situation, all while keeping their position in the workplace. The Commission is not supporting this recommendation.
