Carers Australia welcomes vote for Royal Commission into Disability Abuse
25 February 2019
Carers Australia welcomes the Parliament’s support for a Royal Commission to inquire into violence, abuse and neglect of people with disability.
Ara Cresswell, Carers Australia CEO, said, “As Australia’s peak body supporting family and friend carers, we are all too aware of the devastating effect of violence, abuse and neglect on both people with disabilities and the people who love and care for them.
“Unfortunately, previous inquiries into pervasive abuse of people with disability, particularly in institutional and residential settings, have had limited effect. We hope that the intensive investigation and publicity that surrounds a Royal Commission will shine a powerful light on the extent of the problem and produce outcomes that will address the injustices for current victims and protect potential victims.
“Carers Australia encourages the Government to establish the Royal Commission and looks forward to contributing to the inquiry.”
