The DisabilityCare Australia Conference My Choice, My Control, My Future was held in Melbourne  from 23 – 24 June 2013.

The Conference was opened by The Hon Jenny Macklin MP, Minister for Disability Reform, with the inaugural Chairman of DisabilityCare Australia, Bruce Bonyhady AM, giving the Keynote address. Carers Australia President Karen Cook and CEO Ara Cresswell took an active part.

Mr. Bonyhady said, “All of us here, today, share a common purpose: to celebrate that DisabilityCare Australia has become a fact - not just a good idea - and through presentations and discussions, to refine and improve the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as part of its continuing co-design.

“It is vital to remember that the world is not going to change for people overnight or next week. It will not be a broken system on Friday afternoon and a perfect world next Monday morning.”

Over the two day conference, participants listened to a range of presentations on the outcomes of many Practical Design Fund projects. These ranged from a training program for carers, online budget tools, a supported decision-making tool for people with intellectual disability, and a culturally-appropriate training package for disability workers in remote Indigenous communities.

Carers Australia CEO Ara Cresswell, facilitated a panel discussion on projects designed to support the role of families and carers.

DisabilityCare Australia launched on 1 July 2013 with an initial roll out in seven sites throughout New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Further roll out will take place from July 2014, with roll out of the scheme in full commencing from July 2016.
