Trying to maintain both paid work and an unpaid caring role can be incredibly stressful. Many carers describe it as like trying to hold down two full-time jobs.
There are many reasons carers combine work while providing unpaid care, including; maintaining career aspirations, financial necessity or to simply participate in society and gain social interaction with peers. Whatever the reason, chances are there will be times when balancing these two roles is very challenging.

The Carers Australia Guide for Employers is designed to help your organisation identify and support carers within the workplace. It includes all you need to know about carers and what your organisation can do to become a carer-friendly employer.
The Carers Australia Guide for Employees is designed to assist unpaid family and friend carers who are juggling paid work with their caring responsibilities. It provides information on what the caring role involves, carers’ workplace entitlements, advice on balancing work and caring responsibilities and information on available supports and services for carers. There is also a lift-out for carers to provide to their employer on the benefits of becoming a carer-friendly workplace, and tips on implementing flexible workplace provisions for working carers.
Two reports have been written on employment and care, which provide the background for the Work & Care initiative;
- ‘The benefits to carers and the economy’ – establishes the Australian demographic context of the ‘tipping point’ for care, it looks at the impact of the caring role on employment and it outlines why improving the employment prospects of carers is beneficial to both carers and the economy.
- ‘The business case for carer-friendly workplaces’ – illustrates what carers need to combine work and care. It highlights the benefits to employers of providing carer-friendly workplaces. It also provides examples of flexible leave and working arrangements.
