Carers Australia elects new President

Posted August 12, 2013

Carers Australia CEO, Ara Cresswell said, “I’m very pleased to welcome Karen into the role of President knowing that her experience and expertise both in the healthcare sector and at Carers Australia stands us in great stead for the future.”

Ms Cook has extensive experience in the healthcare sector, having been a registered nurse for over 30 years, she is currently a specialist advisor at Health Workforce Australia and previously served as CEO of national peak body The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council, and before that as CEO of the Nurses Board of the ACT.

“I am very excited to have become President of Carers Australia at such a crucial time for the 2.6 million unpaid carers in this country,” said Ms Cook.

“There are many essential reforms underway that will affect carers, and it is vital that they be represented at the top table of Australian politics,” she said.

Ms Cook’s extensive experience in the healthcare sector will value add to the work of Carers Australia.

“I spent years in nursing regulation and accreditation, so I’m very interested in the development of professional practice standards, codes of conduct and codes of ethics, and what the expectations are of health professionals.

“I’m particularly interested in the interface between carers and health professionals, and I would like to see some strides forward there.  Carers must be valued and acknowledged for the role that they play - valued as a critical part of our country, not an invisible part of our country.

“I look forward to working with Ara Cresswell, and her team my fellow Board Members and my colleagues in the state and territory Carers Associations to secure the necessary supports and services that carers require.”
