Young carers are people up to 25 years of age who care in families where someone has an illness, a disability, a mental health issue or who has an alcohol or other drug problem.
Carers Australia runs the Young Carer Information, Advice, Support and Referral program and works closely with the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centres.
Young carers often have difficulty identifying themselves as carers. They see doing what they do for their loved ones as part of their normal role. The Young Carer Program raises awareness of who young carers are and assists young carers to find information about the caring role.
Carers Australia also can refer young carers to Carer Counselling.
The Commonwealth Respite and Carelink centres provide a single point of contact to assist young carers with respite. Please call 1800 052 222
