New executive team for Carers Australia

November 30, 2009

Media Alert

Carers Australia is the recognised national voice of Australian carers. Our members are the carers associations in each state and territory. We have no political affiliation. We work with all parties to achieve better outcomes for all carers. We believe that all carers are entitled to the same rights, choices and opportunities as other Australians.

New executive team for Carers Australia

Carers Australia is pleased to announce the election of a new executive team to lead the organisation.

Ms Helen Johnson has today been elected President of Carers Australia, with Mr Tim Moore as Vice President following the Annual General Meeting in Canberra.

The Treasurer Mr Colin Allen and Secretary Ms Lynne Strathie will continue in their respective roles, having been reappointed for another term.

Ms Johnson said "I am thrilled to be the new President and look forward to leading Carers Australia into 2010 and beyond.

"This is a time of positive change for carers with many initiatives on the horizon such as the National Carer Recognition Framework and long-term care and support scheme."

Ms Johnson cares for her 16 year old son and her 81 year old father who both require continual around-the-clock support.

Since 2003 Helen has been active on various committees and boards both at a regional, state and national level and is currently working part-time as Parent Support Worker with the Victorian Association for Children with a Disability. Ms Johnson served as Vice President of Carers Australia between 2007 and 2009.

Tim Moore is a youth worker and research scholar with the Institute of Child Protection Studies at the Australian Catholic University. Tim has had personal experience with caring and is particularly passionate about carers in families affected by mental illness and alcohol or other drug use.

This change sees Carers Australia farewell Pam Webster, Toni Dunshea and Roger Huband as board members. Ms Webster has been a board member since 2005, as has Ms Dunshea and Mr Huband since 2003.

"Their contributions over the years have enriched Carers Australia and I thank them for their valuable input" said Ms Johnson.

"I would like to particularly thank Pam Webster for valuable contribution and leadership as President over the last two years"

"Pam held a steady course that saw a number of changes to the way Australia views carers" said Ms Johnson.

"I have enjoyed working alongside Pam as Vice President and feel confident coming into the role with such secure foundations in place thanks to her hard work."
